Netflix has cancelled Marvel’s Ironfist after just two seasons, making it the first Marvel series to be shelved, but was this too premature?
Marvel and Netflix released a joint statement to Deadline regarding the cancellation, saying “[w]e’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the Immortal Ironfist will live on”.
While it’s clear that the first season was slightly sub par (in comparison to its Marvel/Netflix siblings), fans were in agreement of the second season’s lift in quality and direction.
Considering Netflix and Marvel’s statement, it’s not unreasonable to say that Finn Jones’ character will appear again in a possible crossover event - a ‘Defenders’ sequel perhaps - but as for a revival of the series elsewhere, it may need some serious fanfare tp persuade the powers that be.
Disney’s streaming service will be announced soon and with it comes a whole slew of new shows under the Disney label, with that includes Marvel properties (disregarding, of course, those who still contracted to Netflix - Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Daredevil), so it’s possible Ironfist could be placed there.
The quicker pace, better action set-pieces and further development of Marvel characters within Ironfist season two made it a much more digestible viewing. The introduction of Steel Serpent, Typhoid Mary and Orson Randall made for a very intriguing inclusion and had fans buoyant for what may come next.
Whatever the outcome, both fans and critics alike were in agreement of Ironfist’s turn around and shocked at the sudden cancellation. Finn jones himself remains positive, releasing a statement on his instagram thanking fans for the support, stating: “with every end is a new beginning.”
